Trenches Planned on KP Routes Leading Islamabad
Sources say authorities have surveyed routes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and plan trenches and barriers at selected Islamabad entry points amid upcoming political marches.
ISLAMABAD: Authorities have prepared a security strategy for major routes connecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the federal capital ahead of planned political protests, with trenches and physical barriers reportedly among measures being considered to restrict protest convoys from entering Islamabad.
According to reports citing official sources, authorities surveyed routes leading from KP to Islamabad before drawing up the security arrangements. Trenches are planned at selected locations along major approaches, including areas near 26 Number Chungi and Margalla-Taxila, while barriers are expected to be positioned on other routes leading towards the capital.
The security preparations cover the Motorway and GT Road, two of the main corridors connecting KP and adjoining areas with Islamabad. Separate reporting also identifies Taxila, Margalla Check Post, 26 Number Chungi and Tarnol among locations covered by heightened security planning.
Security Measures Intensify Ahead of Protests
The preparations come amid multiple announced political demonstrations. Jamaat-e-Islami is launching its march towards Islamabad on September 20, while PTI has announced a march towards the federal capital for September 27.
Major arteries leading towards Islamabad’s Red Zone had already been restricted with shipping containers as authorities increased police deployment ahead of the demonstrations.
A control room has also reportedly been established at the Interior Ministry to monitor the law-and-order situation, with surveillance covering motorways, highways, commercial centres and internal Islamabad routes.
