Pakistan, Belarus Agree to Deepen Defence and Security Cooperation

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Belarus Security Council chief Lieutenant General Aleksandr Volfovich discuss regional security, mutual interests and expanding bilateral defence cooperation at GHQ Rawalpindi.

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and Belarus have expressed their desire to further strengthen bilateral defence and security cooperation as a high-level Belarusian delegation met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

Belarusian Delegation Meets Asim Munir

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on October 7, the Belarusian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Aleksandr Volfovich, State Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the evolving regional and global security environment, matters of mutual interest and the existing scope of defence cooperation between Pakistan and Belarus.

Field Marshal Asim Munir reiterated Pakistan’s desire to further deepen defence and security cooperation with Belarus, signalling Islamabad’s interest in expanding institutional engagement between the two countries.

Lieutenant General Volfovich reciprocated the desire for stronger cooperation in the defence and security fields and appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace and stability, according to ISPR.

Pakistan-Belarus Relations Expand

The latest engagement comes against the backdrop of gradually expanding Pakistan-Belarus relations. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on February 3, 1994. Belarus opened its embassy in Islamabad in 2014, while Pakistan established its embassy in Minsk the following year. More than 100 agreements and memoranda of understanding have since been concluded across different areas of bilateral cooperation.

Defence contacts have also continued at the institutional level. Pakistan’s embassy in Minsk has previously reported meetings between Pakistani and Belarusian defence officials aimed at expanding cooperation in prospective areas of mutual interest.

Security Cooperation Through SCO

Security engagement between the two countries has also developed through multilateral forums. A Belarusian delegation was among those that participated in the 46th meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Council held in Islamabad on September 14, 2026, where member states discussed regional and international security issues.

The GHQ meeting therefore adds another high-level channel to the broader relationship between Islamabad and Minsk, with both sides publicly signalling interest in expanding defence and security cooperation amid changing regional and global security dynamics.
