Crackdown on Plastic Bottles to Start Tomorrow in Islamabad

District administration announces citywide inspections from October 13 as authorities extend their environmental campaign beyond polythene bags, with the precise legal scope of bottle restrictions requiring clarification.

ISLAMABAD, October 12, 2026: The Islamabad district administration has decided to expand its ongoing Plastic-Free Islamabad campaign, announcing that enforcement activities targeting single-use plastic bottles will begin across the federal capital on Tuesday, October 13.

The decision marks a new phase in the administration’s environmental initiative, which has primarily focused on restricting the use, sale and distribution of polythene shopping bags.

According to the district administration, the campaign will now cover single-use plastic bottles, with inspection teams expected to conduct operations against reported violations involving their sale and use.

Officials said the new measures would be implemented without discrimination as part of efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promote environmentally responsible practices throughout Islamabad.

Daily Enforcement Operations to Continue

The district administration said its teams were already conducting daily inspections across the capital to ensure compliance with restrictions on disposable plastic products.

The ongoing campaign has involved inspections of commercial establishments, wholesalers, suppliers and manufacturing facilities, with officials monitoring the availability and distribution of prohibited plastic items.

According to figures previously released by the district administration, 3,246 inspections had been conducted since October 2, resulting in the confiscation of approximately 2,944 kilograms of polythene bags.

The administration also reported 481 arrests and the closure of 35 shops during the campaign. These figures represent the administration’s reported enforcement activities and have not been independently verified.

With the planned inclusion of disposable bottles, the administration intends to broaden its efforts beyond conventional shopping bags and address additional sources of plastic waste.

Existing Regulations and Bottle Restrictions

Islamabad’s environmental enforcement framework includes the Single-use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations, 2023, which apply to the Islamabad Capital Territory.

The regulations prohibit specified disposable plastic items, including polythene bags, certain food-service products, disposable cutlery and other listed materials.

However, the regulations establish a separate compliance timetable for plastic beverage containers. Under Schedule II, single-use plastic beverage containers must contain at least 50 percent recycled plastic from July 1, 2028.

A report published by Dawn on October 12 also quoted a senior environmental official as saying bottled water remained exempt from the relevant restrictions until 2028.

The district administration’s latest announcement did not specify which categories of plastic bottles would be covered by the October 13 operations or how the measures would align with the existing regulatory timetable.

Further clarification would therefore be necessary to determine the precise obligations of retailers, suppliers and consumers.

Public Cooperation Sought

The Islamabad district administration has appealed to residents, shopkeepers, traders and businesses to cooperate with the Plastic-Free Islamabad campaign.

Officials urged citizens to avoid restricted disposable plastic products and adopt reusable, environmentally responsible alternatives wherever practical.

The initiative seeks to reduce plastic litter in markets, streets, public spaces and drainage systems while promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Authorities maintained that continued public participation would be essential to achieving the campaign’s environmental objectives.

The expanded inspections form part of Islamabad’s broader push towards reducing plastic pollution, with the administration reiterating its commitment to daily monitoring and enforcement in the federal capital.
