All Parties to Join Parliamentary Investigation Into PIMS Incident

ISLAMABAD: The government has sought nominations from all parliamentary parties for representation on the special parliamentary committee being constituted to investigate the recent incident at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), parliamentary sources told Islamabad Tribune.

According to the sources, the committee’s formal notification is expected to be issued once political parties submit the names of their representatives. The proposed body will include representation from across the political spectrum.

The development follows a motion passed by the National Assembly on Friday, August 28, authorising the Speaker of the National Assembly, in consultation with the Chairman Senate, to constitute a special parliamentary committee to investigate the PIMS incident. Official reporting on the parliamentary proceedings confirms that Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said all political parties should be represented on the committee.

Committee to Recommend Measures to Prevent Future Incidents

The committee is expected not only to examine the circumstances surrounding the PIMS incident but also to formulate recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in Islamabad Capital Territory. The Speaker has also been authorised to formulate or amend the committee’s terms of reference and composition where required.

Separately, the National Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution No. 60 on August 28, expressing concern over the loss of infant lives at PIMS and calling for facts to be established, responsibility for any negligence or safety lapses to be fixed, and appropriate legal action to be taken against those found responsible.

The latest move adds a parliamentary layer to the investigations already initiated following the PIMS incident, with the special committee expected to begin its work after its membership is finalised and formally notified.
