Islamabad Plans 2,500 IoT Devices as Smart City Services Expand
Smart Islamabad plans 2,500 IoT devices within six months while digital public services and technology training expand opportunities for citizens and students

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad is moving towards more digital and automated civic services under the Smart Islamabad initiative, with 2,500 Internet of Things (IoT) devices planned for installation over the next six months.
The devices are expected to support automated urban management and improve the delivery of civic facilities, helping authorities use technology more effectively across the capital.
Government Services Go Digital
The government is also working to digitise bills, taxes and various public services through a one-stop mobile application and Easy Service Centres.
The initiative aims to reduce the need for citizens to stand in queues or make repeated visits to government offices by bringing multiple services together through digital platforms and service centres.
Technology Training Opens Doors for Students
Alongside smart-city initiatives, technology opportunities are also being expanded for students in Islamabad.
Students ranging from Grade 7 to second year, including participants up to the age of 30, completed Huawei Summer ICT Training during the summer holidays. Participants earned an average of 25 to 28 certifications, giving them exposure to internationally recognised technology skills.
Youth Seen as Key to Digital Growth
Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja said 68 percent of Pakistan’s population comprises young people, while women account for 50 percent of the population.
She said the government wants young people to move beyond simply using technology and become technology producers and developers, creating skills and opportunities within the country’s digital economy.
Cybersecurity and IT Policy Work Continues
Alongside the country’s digital transformation efforts, work is also continuing on the Cyber Security Act and a new IT policy aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s digital and technology framework.
Internship Opportunity for Successful Students
Students who perform successfully in the technology training initiatives can also receive further opportunities.
One successful student was offered an internship in projects of the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications during the winter holidays, providing an opportunity to gain practical experience in government-led technology initiatives.
