Islamabad Police Builds One of South Asia’s Largest Electric Police Fleets
While Islamabad Traffic Police is already operating 40 BYD electric vehicles, another fleet of around 80 BYD EVs has been inducted for the Capital Patrol Unit, as SDPOs continue using BYD Shark double-cabin vehicles for supervisory duties.

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police expands electric fleet with 80 BYD vehicles for Capital Patrol Unit
Islamabad Police has further strengthened its transition towards environmentally sustainable policing by inducting around 80 BYD electric vehicles for the Capital Patrol Unit (CPU), according to informed sources.
The latest addition comes after the successful deployment of 40 BYD electric vehicles with the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), which are already being used for traffic enforcement and road policing across the federal capital.
With the induction of the new fleet, Islamabad Police now has around 120 BYD electric patrol vehicles across its Traffic Police and Capital Patrol Unit, making it one of the largest electric law enforcement fleets in Pakistan.
The newly inducted vehicles will be deployed by the Capital Patrol Unit, which is responsible for highway patrolling, rapid response, crime prevention, and maintaining a visible policing presence on major roads and important routes throughout Islamabad.
SDPOs Already Using BYD Shark Pickups
Alongside the growing fleet of electric patrol SUVs, Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) across Islamabad are already using BYD Shark electrified double-cabin pickup trucks (locally referred to as Radera vehicles) for operational supervision, inspections and field command duties.
The addition of the BYD Shark to the supervisory fleet reflects Islamabad Police’s broader strategy of modernising its transport infrastructure with new-energy vehicles across different operational roles.
Building on Islamabad’s Green Policing Initiative
Earlier this year, Islamabad Traffic Police became Pakistan’s first traffic police force to introduce a large fleet of BYD electric vehicles, including the BYD Atto 2 and BYD Sealion 7, as part of the federal government’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) initiative.
The move aligns with Pakistan’s broader objective of promoting clean transportation, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering operational costs in the public sector.
Why BYD?
BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the world’s largest manufacturer of new-energy vehicles and supplies electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to police and government agencies in numerous countries.
The BYD electric SUVs selected for Islamabad Police offer:
- Zero tailpipe emissions
- Lower fuel and maintenance costs
- Fast-charging capability
- Quiet operation
- Instant acceleration for emergency response
- Driving range suitable for full-day urban patrols
Global Trend
China remains the global leader in electric policing, with police fleets in cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou operating thousands of BYD patrol vehicles. India has also introduced electric vehicles into police service, primarily through Tata Nexon EV and Tata Tigor EV fleets, while several other countries including Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, Australia, the UAE, Mexico and Colombia have integrated electric vehicles into law enforcement operations.
Islamabad Police Strengthens Sustainable Policing
With 40 BYD EVs already serving Islamabad Traffic Police, around 80 additional BYD EVs joining the Capital Patrol Unit, and BYD Shark double-cabin vehicles already assigned to SDPOs, Islamabad Police is rapidly emerging as one of the region’s leading examples of modern, environmentally sustainable policing.
