ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are looking to deepen cooperation in water management, agriculture and environmental sustainability, with fresh talks in Islamabad highlighting the growing role of resource efficiency and food security in their bilateral partnership.
Saudi Minister Meets Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held talks with Saudi Minister for Environment, Water and Agriculture Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley at the Prime Minister’s House on Friday, as the visiting Saudi delegation explored new avenues of cooperation with Pakistan.
Water Management Emerges as Key Focus
Water management emerged as an important component of the discussions. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two sides exchanged views on improving agricultural productivity through technology, research and development, as well as the more efficient use of water resources.
Saudi Arabia Seeks Greater Irrigation and Water Efficiency
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said the visit was also aimed at improving the efficiency of irrigation and water systems, alongside strengthening agriculture, food security, investment and bilateral trade.
Water and Food Security Gain Environmental Significance
The focus carries wider environmental significance for both countries, where water availability and sustainable agricultural production are increasingly important policy challenges. While the PMO statement did not announce a standalone climate agreement, the areas under discussion — water efficiency, sustainable agriculture and environmental cooperation — closely intersect with climate resilience.
Saudi Minister Meets Field Marshal Asim Munir
The Saudi minister also held a separate meeting with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in Rawalpindi, where he expressed interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation particularly in agriculture and environmental sustainability.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Seek Stronger Economic Ties
Prime Minister Shehbaz, meanwhile, called on Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to translate their longstanding strategic relationship into stronger economic, agricultural, trade and investment ties. He also expressed satisfaction over discussions concerning Pakistani agricultural exports to the Kingdom.
Agricultural Experts Expected to Visit Riyadh
The Saudi side reaffirmed its commitment to deeper cooperation with Pakistan across agriculture, water and food security. A Pakistani delegation of agricultural experts is also expected to visit Riyadh to take the discussions forward.
Water Efficiency Could Shape Future Cooperation
The engagement indicates that water efficiency, sustainable food production and environmental cooperation could become increasingly significant components of the broader Pakistan-Saudi economic partnership.
