Islamabad Road Renamed in Memory of Lt Taha Nawaz Abbasi Shaheed

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Employees Co-operative Housing Society (FECHS) has renamed a major road previously known as “Capital Expressway” after Lieutenant Taha Nawaz Abbasi, a Pakistan Navy officer who lost his life in a training aircraft crash earlier this year.

Road Renamed in Tribute

According to a notification dated August 8, 2026, shared with Islamabad Tribune, the road has formally been renamed “Lieutenant Taha Nawaz Abbasi Shaheed Avenue” as a tribute to the late officer.

The notification states that Lt Taha Nawaz Abbasi was a valued member of the society and that the decision was taken “in recognition of and as a tribute to” his sacrifice.

FECHS has also directed its concerned offices and branches to incorporate the new name into official records, maps, plans, correspondence, notices, registers and other relevant documents. The notification bears the name of FECHS President Karamat Ali and was also circulated to Shahid Nawaz Abbasi, identified in the document as the father of Lt Taha Nawaz Abbasi, as well as the society’s Town Planner, General Manager and Record Branch.

New Road Sign Installed

A photograph accompanying the notification shows a newly installed blue road sign carrying the name “Lieutenant Taha Nawaz Abbasi Shaheed Avenue” in both English and Urdu, indicating that the renaming has begun appearing on the ground.

Officer Lost Life in Training Crash

Lt Taha Nawaz Abbasi was a Pakistan Navy officer undergoing aviation training. Reporting following the June 15, 2026 incident identified him as one of two officers who lost their lives when a training aircraft crashed in Mardan during a routine flight. The other officer was Pakistan Air Force Flight Lieutenant Muhammad Qasim Abdullah.

The decision gives the late officer a permanent memorial within the Islamabad community with which, according to FECHS, he was associated.
