Engineer Suspended After Islamabad Retaining Wall Suffers Rain Damage; Contractor to Rebuild at Own Cost
DC Islamabad says technical team inspected the site, remaining wall will be demolished and reconstructed, while the contractor faces blacklisting over alleged quality failures.
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad district administration has initiated disciplinary and corrective action after a retaining wall in the Pind Begwal area was damaged following recent rainfall, prompting concerns over the quality of construction.
The issue came to public attention after videos and images of the damaged wall were widely shared on social media. Journalist Azaz Syed claimed the retaining wall, reportedly part of a Rs280 million local government project, had developed significant damage only months after its construction.
Responding publicly on X, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon said a technical team, accompanied by administrative officers, had visited the site to assess the damage.
According to the DC, the site engineer of the Local Government Department has been suspended for failing to ensure the quality of work. He further stated that the remaining portion of the retaining wall is being demolished and that the entire wall will be reconstructed at the contractor’s expense.
The DC also announced that the contractor will be blacklisted following the incident.
While social media posts claimed the project cost approximately Rs280 million, the district administration’s statement did not independently confirm the reported cost. Authorities have, however, acknowledged deficiencies in the work by ordering disciplinary action and reconstruction.
