Comsats Islamabad Secures Pakistan’s Top Spot in U.S. News 2026–27 Rankings

Islamabad-based university ranks 410th globally with a score of 52, while its Mathematics programme places joint 28th worldwide in the 2026–27 rankings.

ISLAMABAD: COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has emerged as Pakistan’s highest-ranked university in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities 2026–2027 rankings, securing the 410th position worldwide with an overall score of 52.

CUI Ranks 410th Globally

The latest U.S. News rankings, released in June, assess more than 2,250 universities across more than 100 countries, with a strong emphasis on academic research performance and reputation.

Available ranking data confirms CUI at 410th globally in the 2027 edition, with a score of 52.0.

Quaid-i-Azam University, another major Islamabad institution, is ranked joint 451st globally with a score of 50.7.

According to information released by CUI, the next Pakistani institutions in the overall ranking include The University of Lahore at 479th, University of Management and Technology at 573rd and National University of Sciences and Technology at 590th.

Strong Performance in Mathematics and AI

CUI also recorded particularly strong results in individual subject rankings.

The university is ranked:

  • 28th globally in Mathematics
  • 67th in Green and Sustainable Science and Technology
  • 142nd in Engineering
  • 151st in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • 178th in Artificial Intelligence
  • 216th in Computer Science
  • 290th in Chemistry

The Mathematics result stands out as one of the university’s strongest international performances, putting CUI among the world’s top 30 institutions in the subject under the U.S. News methodology.

Its wider subject performance also shows a concentration of research strength across engineering, sustainability, computing and applied sciences.

Research Focus Shapes the Ranking

The 2026–27 U.S. News global ranking evaluates institutions primarily through measures connected to research and academic reputation, rather than functioning simply as a measure of undergraduate teaching quality.

U.S. News says the latest edition evaluates universities on academic research and reputation, making the results particularly relevant to research-intensive institutions.

CUI Rector Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, in a statement provided by the university, described the result as recognition of CUI’s focus on research excellence, innovation and international collaboration, saying the institution would seek to further increase the global impact of its research.

Islamabad Strengthens Position in Higher Education

The latest results also underline Islamabad’s significant presence in Pakistan’s higher-education landscape, with CUI and Quaid-i-Azam University occupying the top two Pakistani positions in the ranking data cited above.

It is important, however, to interpret international university rankings within their respective methodologies.

U.S. News’ Best Global Universities table is heavily research-oriented, meaning its results should not automatically be treated as an across-the-board assessment of every aspect of university performance.
