KP Emergency a Serious Political Mistake, Says Barrister Gohar

PTI chairman says the proposed move would undermine provincial autonomy and public mandate, urging the federal government to reconsider the decision and resolve political differences through constitutional dialogue.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has strongly opposed the proposed imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing it as a serious political mistake and calling for the decision to be withdrawn.

Barrister Gohar said the proposed move would be undemocratic and stressed that the constitutional and legal rights of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must be respected. He maintained that lasting peace and stability could not be achieved by disregarding the public mandate or weakening provincial autonomy.

The PTI chairman said there was no disagreement over the need to eliminate terrorism. However, he emphasized that the fight against terrorism should not be used as a justification for suppressing public voices.

PTI Calls for Political Dialogue and National Unity

He called for national unity, a coordinated strategy and cooperation among relevant stakeholders to address security challenges, warning against creating confrontation between the federal and provincial governments.

According to Barrister Gohar, weakening provinces would not strengthen the federation, as strong provinces form the foundation of a strong federal system. He urged the federal government to consider ground realities, respect public sentiment and address political differences through meaningful negotiations.

PTI Vows to Defend Provincial Autonomy

The PTI chairman further said his party would raise its voice on every constitutional forum to protect the public mandate and provincial autonomy.

He urged the federal government to reconsider the proposed decision, adding that extraordinary measures could lead to further political and economic difficulties. He stressed that constitutional supremacy, democratic principles and dialogue should guide efforts to resolve the situation.

Barrister Gohar said reviewing the decision would be in the national interest and called on the authorities to prioritize political consultation over confrontation.
