PTI Parliamentary Party Rejects KP Emergency, Governor’s Rule
Following a three-hour meeting, PTI lawmakers unanimously reject federal intervention in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, condemn reported arrests of party leaders and vow to defend provincial autonomy through constitutional and legal forums.

PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD, October 11, 2026: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s parliamentary party has unanimously rejected the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the federal government’s decision as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a direct challenge to the people’s electoral mandate.
PTI Rejects Emergency and Governor’s Rule
According to a statement issued following a three-hour parliamentary party meeting, PTI lawmakers strongly condemned the emergency arrangements, arguing that restricting the authority of an elected provincial government undermines democratic institutions and Pakistan’s federal structure.
The parliamentary party maintained that the decision disregards constitutional principles and the mandate given to the provincial government by voters.
PTI warned that weakening an elected provincial administration through extraordinary federal measures could establish a dangerous precedent, increase political instability and deepen tensions between Islamabad and Peshawar.
The statement emphasised that political disagreements must be resolved through constitutional and democratic processes rather than coercive administrative measures.
PTI Questions Different Treatment of KP and Balochistan
During the meeting, parliamentary party members also reviewed the security situations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, raising questions about what they described as inconsistent federal policies.
PTI argued that if deteriorating security conditions were the principal justification for imposing emergency measures, the federal government should explain why similar action had not been taken in Balochistan, where the party claimed the situation was more serious.
The parliamentary party questioned why the same constitutional standards were not being applied uniformly across all provinces.
PTI alleged that the decision was politically motivated and primarily intended to target its provincial government rather than address security challenges.
Party Reaffirms Commitment to Counterterrorism
The parliamentary party reiterated its unconditional condemnation of terrorism in all forms and reaffirmed its commitment to efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability.
However, the statement maintained that effective counterterrorism policies require cooperation with elected representatives and consideration of provincial concerns.
PTI demanded that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s resolution on counterterrorism and the recommendations of the provincial peace jirga be given due importance in developing future security policies.
PTI Condemns Reported Arrests of Sohail Afridi and Junaid Akbar
The parliamentary party also strongly condemned the reported arrest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, maintaining that he remains the province’s elected chief minister.
According to PTI, depriving the chief minister of his constitutional authority represents a serious disregard for the public mandate and could create a dangerous precedent for provincial governance.
The party further condemned the reported arrest of its provincial president, Junaid Akbar Khan, and demanded his immediate release.
Lawmakers expressed serious concern over reported detentions and alleged harassment of other elected representatives and party workers.
The parliamentary party demanded an immediate end to what it described as unlawful detentions and politically motivated actions.
The allegations concerning individual arrests and their legal circumstances require independent confirmation.
PTI Raises Concerns Over KP Police Actions
The parliamentary party also criticised the conduct of the Inspector General of Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and questioned recent police actions involving PTI representatives.
The statement alleged that arrests of party leaders and the use of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) provisions had taken place under pressure from the federal government.
PTI maintained that the police were constitutionally obligated to uphold the law rather than serve political objectives.
It demanded a legal review of MPO orders and appropriate action against officials found responsible for any misuse of authority.
These allegations reflect the parliamentary party’s position and have not been independently established.
Federal Government Cites Security Concerns
The parliamentary party’s rejection follows President Asif Ali Zardari’s approval of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution on October 11.
The decision followed recommendations from the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The federal government cited the deteriorating security situation in the province and concerns about the provincial administration’s approach to counterterrorism as reasons for the intervention.
The federal position contrasts sharply with PTI’s argument that the decision threatens democratic governance and provincial autonomy.
PTI Vows Constitutional and Legal Response
Concluding its meeting, the parliamentary party announced that it would approach all available constitutional and legal forums to protect the public mandate and the province’s constitutional rights.
PTI reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic institutions, provincial autonomy and the supremacy of the Constitution.
The party maintained that political disputes should be settled through dialogue, democratic engagement and constitutional mechanisms, warning that continued confrontation between the federal and provincial authorities could deepen the country’s political challenges.
