Dr Tanvir Khaliq Gets Additional Charge as PIMS Executive Director
Health Ministry assigns SZABMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tanwir Khaliq additional charge of PIMS Executive Director for three months or until a regular appointment, while Dr Muhammad Salman returns to NIH with immediate effect.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has made another major administrative change at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), assigning Prof Dr Tanwir Khaliq, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), additional charge as Executive Director of the capital’s largest public-sector hospital.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination on October 5, 2026, Prof Dr Khaliq has been given additional charge of the BPS-21 post of Executive Director, PIMS, in addition to his existing responsibilities as SZABMU Vice Chancellor.
Khaliq Given Three-Month Additional Charge
The notification states that the arrangement has been made in pursuance of directives from the Prime Minister’s Office communicated on October 2.
Prof Dr Khaliq will hold the additional responsibility for three months or until a regular incumbent becomes available, whichever is earlier. He will also be entitled to additional remuneration in accordance with applicable government rules.
The ministry simultaneously ordered the repatriation of Dr Muhammad Salman, who had been serving as Executive Director of PIMS, to his parent department. He has been directed to resume his duties at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, with immediate effect.
The administrative change has also been reported by multiple news outlets on Sunday following issuance of the ministry notification.
Dr Salman Repatriated to NIH
Dr Salman had taken charge as PIMS Executive Director at the end of August after being transferred from NIH on deputation. His appointment followed a major administrative reshuffle at PIMS ordered by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. At the time, he was also retaining additional responsibility at NIH.
The NIH’s official website continues to identify Dr Muhammad Salman as its Chief Executive Officer, supporting his substantive association with the institution.
Khaliq to Head SZABMU and PIMS
Prof Dr Tanwir Khaliq is a senior medical academic and surgeon. SZABMU’s official records identify him as the university’s Vice Chancellor, while its Vice Chancellor Secretariat lists his medical and surgical qualifications and current leadership role.
The latest decision effectively places Prof Dr Khaliq at the helm of both SZABMU and PIMS during the interim period, pending the appointment or availability of a regular Executive Director for the hospital.
