Eight Suspended PIMS Officials Face ECL Placement Over Newborn Deaths

ISLAMABAD: The investigation into the deaths of 14 newborns at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has entered a new phase, with authorities deciding to initiate further legal measures against eight suspended hospital officials, sources familiar with the development told Islamabad Tribune.

According to the sources, Islamabad Police have formally recommended that the names of the eight suspended officials be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL), which would restrict them from travelling abroad while proceedings connected with the case continue.

Sources said approval has also been given for the registration of a criminal case against the suspended officials. The development follows recommendations made by an inquiry committee that examined the circumstances surrounding the deaths and called for criminal proceedings against officials found potentially responsible.

PIMS Executive Director Dr Imran Sikandar is among the eight officials who have been suspended in connection with the matter, according to the information available.

Investigation Included CCTV, Safe City Footage

The latest development follows an extensive inquiry in which statements of relevant hospital officials and other individuals were recorded, while available CCTV and Safe City footage was also examined as part of the fact-finding process.

Sources said Islamabad Police have now formally recommended that all eight officials be placed on the ECL as authorities move towards the next stage of proceedings.

Placement on the ECL or registration of a case does not, by itself, establish criminal liability. Any allegations against the officials remain subject to investigation, due process and determination by the competent authorities and courts.
