Mobile, Internet Services May Be Downgraded in Rawalpindi From Sept 27

Punjab authorities seek 2G, 3G, and 4G jamming at specified Rawalpindi locations amid security concerns ahead of Sept 27 protest

RAWALPINDI: Mobile phone and internet services may be downgraded at specified locations in Rawalpindi from September 27 as authorities step up security measures ahead of a planned protest in Islamabad.

Punjab authorities have sought the federal government’s approval to downgrade mobile and internet services and jam 2G, 3G and 4G networks at selected locations in Rawalpindi, citing the expected law and order situation.

The proposed restrictions would apply to specified locations in Rawalpindi city, while the exact points where connectivity would be affected are to be identified separately.

The areas mentioned in the request also include Brahma Bahtar, M-1, Ganjoo, Ahata, Taxila City, Wah Saddar, Thallian, and Chakri.

Similar Restrictions Sought in Attock

Similar restrictions have been sought in Attock, where mobile and internet services may also be downgraded from September 27.

The proposed measures come as security preparations intensify ahead of the September 27 protest in Islamabad. Punjab has also imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5 and sought Rangers deployment in Rawalpindi and other districts.

The proposed network restrictions do not amount to a confirmed blanket shutdown across Rawalpindi, as the request concerns specific locations and requires approval from the relevant federal authorities.
