Islamabad Road Closures Push NRE Exam to November 8
PMDC shifts NRE Step-I from October 11 to November 8 for foreign-qualified medical and dental graduates, citing “unavoidable circumstances”; the official notice does not specifically attribute the decision to Islamabad road restrictions.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has rescheduled the National Registration Examination (NRE) Step-I, moving the examination from Sunday, October 11, 2026, to Sunday, November 8, 2026, in a development affecting Pakistani medical and dental graduates who obtained their qualifications abroad.
PMDC Announces Revised Examination Date
The PMDC Examination Department announced the revised schedule through a public notice dated October 5. The council said the examination had been rescheduled due to “unavoidable circumstances” and advised candidates to continue checking its official website for further information. PMDC’s official public-announcement page also lists the NRE Step-I rescheduling notice among its latest updates.
The postponement comes at a time when uncertainty over travel and access to Islamabad has drawn attention from students and commuters. Routes leading towards the federal capital have faced disruption and precautionary arrangements in recent days in connection with an ongoing political march, according to reports by Reuters and the Associated Press.
However, PMDC has not officially stated that road closures or traffic restrictions caused the postponement. Its public notice gives only “unavoidable circumstances” as the reason. Therefore, any direct connection between Islamabad’s route situation and the NRE rescheduling would go beyond what the council has formally announced.
NRE Important for Foreign Medical Graduates
The change is particularly important for Pakistanis who completed medical or dental education at foreign institutions and are pursuing professional registration in the country. PMDC has previously clarified that the NRE forms a central part of the licensing process for eligible foreign medical graduates, while its examination framework says the test is conducted under Section 18 of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Act, 2022.
Under the examination structure published by the council, the NRE assesses whether eligible foreign-qualified medical graduates meet the professional knowledge and competency standards required for medical practice in Pakistan. The examination framework consists of a theory component and a clinical skills component, subject to the applicable PMDC rules and eligibility requirements.
PMDC guidelines for Pakistani students studying medicine or dentistry abroad also identify the National Registration Examination as a licensing requirement for eligible graduates seeking to practise in Pakistan. Specific regulatory provisions and exemptions may apply depending on a graduate’s qualifications and status.
October Registration Already Closed
The official NRE portal currently shows registration for the October 2026 Step-I examination as closed and lists September 15, 2026, as the application deadline.
Candidates who were preparing to appear on October 11 should therefore treat November 8, 2026 as the revised examination date and continue monitoring PMDC communications for any further instructions concerning examination centres, reporting arrangements, roll-number slips or other administrative details.
