Rs8.9bn Bid Wins Race for Islamabad’s Dubai-Style Cricket Stadium
35,000-seat international venue near D-12 moves closer to construction after CDA opens financial bids; project includes major road infrastructure and aims for completion within one year of groundbreaking.
ISLAMABAD:Islamabad has moved a step closer to getting its first purpose-built international cricket stadium after the Capital Development Authority (CDA) opened the financial bids for the mega sports infrastructure project, with the Habib–ZKB–EA Consortium emerging as the lowest evaluated bidder by offering Rs8.90 billion for the construction and external development works.
35,000-Seat International Cricket Stadium Planned
According to the CDA, the proposed stadium will be constructed near Sector D-12, at the foothills of the Margalla Hills, and is planned as a 35,000-seat international-standard cricket venue inspired by the design and spectator experience of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The project is intended to strengthen Islamabad’s position as a major sporting destination and provide the federal capital with a dedicated venue capable of hosting international cricket, Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, and other national sporting events.
Project Includes Supporting Infrastructure
The development will extend beyond the stadium itself. Official plans include:
- Approximately 3 kilometres of three-lane approach roads.
- Parking facilities.
- Utility infrastructure.
- Landscaping.
- Other supporting works required to accommodate large crowds and international sporting events.
The road network is expected to improve access to the new sports complex while supporting future urban development in the surrounding D-12 area.
Major Sports Infrastructure Investment
The project represents one of the largest sports infrastructure investments undertaken by the CDA in recent years. Authorities have indicated that construction is targeted for completion within one year after work formally begins, although the timeline will depend on the completion of procurement formalities, contract award, mobilisation, and subsequent execution.
Islamabad to Get Dedicated International Cricket Venue
Islamabad currently relies primarily on the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, located in neighbouring Rawalpindi—to host international fixtures involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). A dedicated stadium within the federal capital has long been discussed as part of broader plans to expand sports infrastructure and create modern recreational facilities for residents.
Contract Yet to Be Awarded
The financial bid opening marks an important milestone in the procurement process. However, the contract has not yet been formally awarded. Under public procurement procedures, the bid remains subject to detailed technical and financial evaluation, regulatory requirements, and final approval by the competent authority before construction can commence.
