Search Continues for Six-Year-Old Girl Swept Into Open Drain in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate a six-year-old girl who reportedly fell into an open drain near Lal Haveli during heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, officials said.
Child Reportedly Swept Away During Heavy Rain
According to initial reports, the child, identified as Hareem, had travelled to Rawalpindi with her parents to visit relatives. After dinner, the family was returning to their vehicle near Committee Chowk when the girl reportedly fell into the open drain amid heavy rainfall and waterlogged streets.
Rescue 1122 personnel reached the scene shortly after receiving the emergency call and launched a search operation in the drain and adjoining areas. Police and district administration officials also joined the rescue efforts.
According to officials, the City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi directed police personnel to extend full cooperation to Rescue 1122 personnel engaged in the search operation. The search remained underway at the time of filing this report, and the child had not yet been recovered.
Safety Concerns Renewed
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the dangers posed by open drains during the monsoon season, particularly amid heavy rainfall and urban flooding. It has also renewed calls for improved drainage infrastructure and enhanced public safety measures across the city.
Authorities said the search operation would continue until the child is located and urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid waterlogged areas and open drains, and follow official safety advisories during periods of heavy rainfall.
