DC Islamabad Inspects Rain-Hit Areas, Orders Action Over Blocked Drain
District administration says around 150mm rainfall caused an E-11 drain to overflow, while slabs allegedly placed over a drain in Ghauri Town Phase II obstructed water flow; additional pumps and heavy machinery deployed.
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon on Tuesday inspected several rain-affected areas of the federal capital and supervised dewatering operations after heavy rainfall inundated roads and low-lying localities.
According to the Islamabad district administration, around 150mm of rainfall was recorded in E-11, overwhelming the capacity of a local drain and causing water to spill onto surrounding roads. Rainwater also entered some basements that had already been sealed by the administration. Independent reporting also confirmed the 150mm rainfall figure and the overflow in E-11.
The administration said dewatering operations were launched in affected areas, with additional pumps and sanitation teams deployed to remove accumulated water and restore normal conditions.
During a visit to Ghauri Town Phase II, the deputy commissioner reviewed water accumulation and directed officials to accelerate drainage operations by deploying additional dewatering pumps.
According to the district administration, local residents had placed slabs over a drain in Ghauri Town Phase II, obstructing the natural flow of rainwater and contributing to waterlogging in the area. The administration described Ghauri Town Phase II as an unauthorised housing scheme and said the deputy commissioner ordered strict legal action over the obstruction of the drain.
Heavy Machinery Deployed in Affected Areas
Rescue personnel and other relevant departments, backed by heavy machinery, remained deployed in affected areas as drainage and response operations continued.
Heavy rainfall affected several parts of Islamabad on Tuesday, with reports of water accumulation on major roads and disruption to traffic. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also forecast further rain and thundershowers at isolated places in Islamabad and the Potohar region.
