Islamabad on High Alert: Heavy Rains May Trigger Urban Flooding
PMD and Flood Forecasting Division warn of heavy rainfall from August 1–4, urging authorities and residents in Islamabad to prepare for possible waterlogging and flash flooding.
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), in coordination with the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), has placed Islamabad on high alert after forecasting heavy rainfall between August 1 and August 4, raising concerns over urban flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions across the federal capital.
According to the latest weather advisory, Islamabad is expected to receive widespread rain and thunderstorms over the coming days as a strong monsoon system influences the region. The PMD has warned that low-lying areas could experience significant water accumulation, while heavy downpours may overwhelm drainage systems and disrupt routine traffic.
Heavy Monsoon System Expected to Intensify
The advisory also highlights the possibility of flash flooding in vulnerable areas across northern Pakistan, including hill torrents, while the upper catchments of the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. A deep low-pressure system moving from India is likely to further intensify rainfall activity over parts of the country.
Authorities Directed to Remain Prepared
The Flood Forecasting Division has advised all relevant departments to remain prepared for any emergency situation, particularly in urban centres vulnerable to flooding. Civic agencies have been urged to monitor drainage systems and respond promptly to any rain-related incidents.
Public Advised to Exercise Caution
Residents of Islamabad have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall, exercise caution while driving, and stay away from flooded roads, underpasses, and streams. Authorities have also warned that water may remain accumulated in low-lying areas for an extended period if heavy rainfall persists.
